Drinking & Driving: I'm thankful that my stupid decisions never created a victim

Just reading this story about the mayor of Traverse City getting busted for driving under the influence. 9&10 news reports that Wednesday night around 9pm Traverse City police saw a car cross the center line on East Eight Street, then swerve into the bike lane before being pulled over. Police say his blood alcohol content was .120%, Michigan's legal BAC limit is .08%.

I'm not going to go into how stupid it is to drive while drunk. The mayor knows this, he released a statement, “I deeply regret my actions. I've embarrassed my family, and the Office of Mayor in Traverse City. I apologize to all involved. I've put my personal life on display which is deeply regrettable.”

I am going to say this, I've driven when I shouldn't have. Actually, let's not BS, I've driven flat out drunk. To be honest, I don't know many people who can really say they haven't. We like to play “goody goody” but let's be real, if you've been through your 20s chances are you've done things you're not proud of.

I just look back and think to myself HOW COULD YOU HAVE BEEN SO STUPID? YOU COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE! How could I have missed that when I was driving drunk? I'll tell you, selfishness. “Hey, I can drive. There are never any cops on my route home,” or “I'm not riding in cab or embarrassing myself by calling someone.” That's what goes through a guy's head in his mid 20s. Not once did I ever think “I'm dangerous, I could kill someone.”

Now let's be clear before the hate starts, I've done a lot of growing up in the last few years. I know my limit and I know what to do if I go over my limit. Would I consider all of what I described as a drinking problem? No. A guy in his 20s having fun once a weekend with friends is normal. It was a judgment problem, and I'm thankful that my stupid decisions never created a victim.

I'm not going to be part of this Facebook mob that rips the mayor apart for a terrible decision. He is a community leader, held to a high standard, who got busted doing something that's way more common than it should be. Mr. Mayor, you too could have killed someone and I hope you use this incident to help teach others to use better judgment.

To our friends heading out to the bars tonight, tomorrow or this weekend – it's not just about a DUI – if you continue to drive under the influence you're a selfish, arrogant, killer just waiting for a victim. Be smart, know your limit. Don't drink and drive.

I'm grateful I learned this lesson before my 30th birthday. Peace and love to all who have become victims of a drunk driver.
