Holy Crap, These Spiders Are Real!

If your like me, you've seen about 87 billion posts on Facebook over the years with photoshopped pictures of massive spiders, or other crazy creatures. So naturally, when pictures started circulating around the internet yesterday of a giant spider in South America the size of a puppy, I automatically assumed it was another fake. Well it turns out that I was wrong! The Goliath Birdeater that was found by Harvard entomologist Piotr Naskrecki while hiking in Guyana. Really nothing more needs to be said about this giant beast, other than it would literally give a heart attack to anyone who is afraid of spiders in the first place. Here is a link to the story. And a picture of the Goliath Birdeater.

Lorde Banned In San Francisco

In case you don't follow Major League Baseball, the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals are in the World Series. Game 1 is tomorrow night, and in a show of support for their hometown Giants, all San Francisco radio stations have banned the artist Lorde from their airwaves for the duration of the World Series. Why? Because her song "Royals" was written after she saw a picture of Kansas City Royals legend George Brett! She said she had the idea for the song in her head, but when she saw an old magazine with Brett's picture, wearing his Royals uniform, that's when the song came together. Personally, I think it's a great display of city support for a team, and applaud San Francisco radio stations for their cleverness. As soon as the World Series is over, apparently she will be welcome back on the city's airwaves.

She Wants To Change Her Husband's What???

During our "trending" feature on the morning show today, one of the stories was about a wife who pretty much gave the worst possible answer for the well being of her marriage on Family Feud. You can't help but feel bad for her poor husband after she gives her answer. To his credit, he took it in stride and kept a smile on face though the whole thing. As always, Steve Harvey handles the whole thing hilariously. Here's the video.

Paul Rudd's Kegger at His Mom's House

Last night the Kansas City Royals advanced to the the World Series. Actor / comedian Paul Rudd is from Kansas City, and is life-long Royas fan, so needless to say he was onhand for the big victory last night. After the game he was invited on the field for an interview with a TV station, and proceeded to invite the entire city to a kegger at his mom's house. Here is the video.

Completely Out of Touch

I had a moment last night in which I felt completely out of touch with the modern world. I'm 37, which isn't old by any means, but apparently old enough to be confused by technology. What technology you ask? That would be Netflix. You probably read that last line, and are currently shaking your head and asking yourself "how the heck could ANYone be confused by Netflix???". The short answer is, I've never used it before. My wife and I aren't really big "tv" people, so we have never subscribed to the service. You may or may not know that we just moved to the area (I'm originally from Northern Michigan, but have spent the past 15 years living in other parts of the Country). So we are staying with my Dad and Step Mom until we purchase a home. My nephews and niece were at the house yesterday, and my Step Mom couldn't get Netflix to load correctly for a show that the kids wanted to watch. I figured "hey, it can't be that hard, I'll figure it out for her". Needless to say, I could not figure it out. I felt like that old guy who still can't operate a cell phone...I had to call in my younger brother for backup. And to answer your question, yes, apparently I am the only person in America that until yesterday had never attempted to use Netflix.

Adorable Cat Video Time

I saw Fish post a blog yesterday with a cat video, and thought "hey, it's been a while since I've posted a good cat video". Because as we all know, there's only 2 things the internet is good for...nudie pics and cat videos! I would love to act all tough and pretend that I'm too cool for internet cat videos, but we all know that I would be lying. Cat videos are fantastic, and usually hilarious. This one made me chuckle yesterday, enjoy.

Walking Dead Hangover

Doing the morning show at 106KHQ, I am normally in bed by 8:30-8:45 every night. My alarm goes off at 4:15am, so it's just a product of my working hours. However the ONE thing I will break my normal worknight bedtime for is "The Walking Dead". Last night was the premiere of season 5 on AMC, so of course I had to stay up well past my bedtime to watch. This means, of course, that I'm a bit groggy this morning (got to bed at about 10:15pm and woke up at my normal 4:15am). I realize I can either watch the episode on demand, or pirate it online the next day, but there are always SO many spoilers on social media that I don't want to take the chance to finding anything out before I watch. I feel like there should be a Facebook / Twitter "spoiler blocker" app. About 20 of the status updates in my newsfeed when I checked my Facebook page this morning were related to "The Walking Dead". So unless I want to completely avoid the internet every Monday (physically impossible) staying up past my 90-year-old-man bedtime is my only option!

The Worst Facebook Status Updates

I'm sort of a hypocrite when it comes to Facebook. I use it every day like most people in the civilized world, but yet I complain about all of the "stupid" status updates I see on a daily basis. While scrolling though my news feed this morning, I came across this link called "6 Facebook statuses that need to stop right now". As I read each of them I found myself saying "yes...yes...YES!". I think everyone will relate to these, and get a good laugh out of it. Here is the article. http://thoughtcatalog.com/terran-tout/2014/10/6-facebook-statuses-that-need-to-stop-right-now/

Red Bull Owes You $10

In our "trending" feature today on the Morning Show, I mentioned a lawsuit in which Red Bull has agreed to pay people for false advertising claims. The lawsuit was filed by Benjamin Careathers. Here is a statement directly from the lawsuit;

Careathers, a Red Bull drinker, claims that the drink maker misled him and other consumers with its slogan "Red Bull gives you wings." He says the company advertised some of the benefits of drinking Red Bull include increased performance, concentration and reaction speed. Of course, none of this was ever proven or backed up by scientific evidence.

So what does this mean for you? Apparently if you purchased a Red Bull between January 1, 2002 and October 3, 2014, the company owes you a $10 check or $15 worth of free Red Bull Products. Here is the link to the settlment page if you want to check it out: http://energydrinksettlement.com/claim

Pumpkin Carving Contest

You have probably heard us on the air talking about the "Northern Michigan Pumpkin Master" contest that we going on right now at 106 KHQ. I am super excited to see what creative designs people come up with for this. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, and carving jack-O-lanterns is just plain old fun! Every year I try to come up with something new and creative to carve. I think my crowning glory was a flawless Detroit Tigers logo about 3 years ago. The idea behind this "Pumpkin Master" contest is that each submission has to have a Northern Michigan theme. THAT is the part that I am excited for. Obviously Northern Michigan means different things to different people, so I really can't wait to see what folks decide to do with their pumpkins. The winner scores a 4-pack of passes to Avalanche Bay indoor waterpark at Boyne Mountain, and a $50 Visa gift card. So get carving, and upload your entry on our website. Make sure you are holding your pumpkin in your submission picture, if it is just the pumpkin alone it will be disqualified. Good luck!

Hilarious Role Reversal Video

It's no secret that men can be fairly rude when approaching girls. Cheesy pickup lines, lame one-liners, or the new standby "oh, I saw your profile pic on Facebook and thought you looked hot". This video showed up in my newsfeed this morning, and it made me legitimately laugh out loud. The video is "If woman catcalled men". My favorite one is "mmmm yea, I bet your bathroom is SO clean!"

The Walking Dead!

I'm not a big TV guy, but the one show I do get completely wrapped up in is "The Walking Dead". I've always been a big zombie movie fan, so when AMC brought "Dead" to tv a couple years ago, I was instantly hooked. The thing about AMC, HBO, and a couple other cable networks is...you have to wait MONTHS in between seasons. So needless to say, I've been going bonkers since the end of season 4. Luckily my wait is almost over, as season 5 debuts next Sunday! (10/12). If you're a fellow Dead-Head, and haven't seen the new trailer for season 5 yet, here it is - http://www.amctv.com/the-walking-dead/videos/trailer-dont-hesitate-the-walking-dead-season-5-premiere

Adopt a Dog!

Every Thursday Heather highlighs some adorable animals that need good homes with our "Heather's Hounds" segment. I've always been a sucker for animals. I have a dog, and two cats which were rescues. I truly believe that a rescue pets from a shelter make the best companions for a family. Today we highlighted "Bandit" from the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, "Bambi" from the Charlevoix Humane Society, and "Darla" from the Au Sable Valley Animal Shelter. If you'd like to see these guys, hit up the Heather's Hounds page here on our website!

My Son's First Halloween

Now that it's officially October, the Halloween barrage is on. This Halloween season is a bit different for me however, because it is my first Halloween as a dad. My wife is over-the-top excited about putting our 8 month old son in his first costume, even though we realize he is too young to actually go trick-or-treating. We were having the discussion the other night about what he should "be" for the upcoming Halloween. My wife wants him to be either a lion or a bear, which I will admit would look adorable, but here is my trepidation. At 8 months old, he doesn't really get the concept of wearing a costume (right?). So if we put anything on his face or head, he is going to immediately pull it off and shove it in his mouth. That's what 8 month olds do, they shove everything they can get their hands on into their mouths (so I am learning). So now we are trying to brainstorm costume ideas for him that don't involve wearing something on his head or face. Feel free to comment with suggestions!
