The SHARE! High School Exchange Program is seeking Host Families for the upcoming fall semester or academic year. Families need not have children in their home to qualify and will provide a bed, meals, and caring home environment. Students are between the ages of 15 and 18, have their own medical insurance, spending money, and are from more than 30 different countries. First Annual Smart Commute Charlevoix Week Slated for June 4-8th
A group of community volunteers are announcing their 1st Annual Smart Commute Charlevoix Challenge to take place from June 4th to June 8th.
Smart Commute Charlevoix is an initiative to support businesses to encourage their employees to find alternative methods of transportation to work for one week. Alternative methods include walking, biking, carpooling, taking public transportation, etc.
Businesses can register to participate for free and will be placed into three categories (small, medium, and large) based upon employee count.
The businesses that have the highest percentage of employee participation will receive free publicity for their business, the commuter cup trophy, and t-shirts for their participating employees..
"Why wouldn't you participate," said Chairperson Bethany Pearson. "It's good for you, good for your employees, your business, and the environment-plus it's absolutely free!"

MOTHER DAUGHTER WEEKEND SCHEDULED FOR CAMP DAGGETT


Mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, big sisters, aunts plus their daughters, sisters and granddaughters ages 7 to 17 are invited to an activity-packed  weekend at the 2nd annual Mother & Daughter Weekend at Camp Daggett, Friday, May 18 through Sunday, May 20.
Again, there will be wonderful activities including smores and singing around the campfire, high ropes activities, bracelet weaving, scrapbooking, Petoskey buddy stones and jewelry, book reviews by McLean & Eakin, an in-house beauty afternoon provided by Talulu Beauty Lounge (some charges apply), a pontoon boat ride, karaoke and great food.

Cost is $150 for mother/daughter, plus $50 for each additional daughter.  Space is limited and registration is on a first come first served basis. Fee includes lodging, food and all activities, unless otherwise noted.

Phi Alpha (The Social Work Honor Society at Ferris State University) is putting together this benefit concert to raise money to help manage programs within Traverse City High School. The admission fee will be $5. Kilkenny's has agreed to donate 10% of their sales during the concert to the High School. There will be a silent auction with many wonderful items to choose from. Free pool and darts will be available during the concert as well. More details will be posted as they are available. We look forward to seeing you there!!

YOUNG AMERICANS

If music and theater are your passion, then the Young American’s summer camp is a great place to learn and perform. The camp is June 26 thru July 1 for grades 3 through college. You will learn and perform with the Young Americans… and perform in a grand finale presentation at the Harbor Springs High School. KAYAK AROUND WALLOON LAKE AND SUPPORT CAMP DAGGETT




Kayaking enthusiasts are invited to participate in the 4th annual Kayak for a Cause on Walloon Lake, a fundraising event for the Camp Daggett Adventure Center (CDAC), Saturday, July 21 and Sunday July 22 from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day.  Beginners and advanced adult kayakers will paddle the 30 miles along the beautiful Walloon Lake shoreline and raise much needed dollars for scholarships for children to attend Camp Daggett Adventure Center programs.

Kayakers are invited to secure pledges at $10 per mile for the weekend.  There are two options: the traditional two-day option for Saturday and Sunday ($300 total pledges) and the all-new one-day option for Saturday only ($150 total pledges.)  All participants will receive a free team shirt, a light breakfast Saturday morning, a delicious home cooked BBQ dinner on Saturday. Two-day participants also receive lunch Sunday, and a “We did it!” celebration to close the event on Sunday afternoon. You must register by June 15 to receive your FREE team shirt. 

Every successful team needs a crew, and there are four easy and fun opportunities to be a member of the Kayak for a Cause Land Crew.  Supporters may make a pledge to a kayaker on the team, purchase a custom designed flag for boats or docks, make a general donation to the scholarship fund or become a sponsor for the event. SLEEPING BEAR MARATHON AND HALF MARATHON
Empire will host marathon and half marathon
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Empire, MI - Runners will take the starting line in Empire on Sunday, October 7, 2012 for the inaugural Sleeping Bear Marathon & Half Marathon. With something to offer both hardcore endurance junkies and recreational endurance athletes, the 26.2-mile and 13.1-mile races are expected to draw over 500 participants.
“Empire and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore are the perfect setting for an event like this,” said race director Joel Gaff, Jr. “The race happens at the peak of fall color season, and the natural beauty of the tree-lined course will attract both locals and visitors.”
The out-and-back marathon course starts and finishes at Johnson Park, and will take athletes by the Sleeping Bear “dune climb”, past Little Glen Lake, and through the village of Glen Arbor, with breathtaking views of the Manitou Islands and Sleeping Bear Dunes along the way. The half marathon will follow the same course, turning around at the 6.5 mile mark near Little Glen Lake.
Registration is $75 for the marathon and $55 for the half marathon before May 1, 2012. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to the Empire Lions Club.
The Empire Lions Club will offer a pasta dinner for athletes the night before the race at the Empire Town Hall. After the race, participants and their families are invited to a barbeque also sponsored by the Empire Lions Club in Johnson Park.

You can be part of our Citizens Review Panel.
The 5-person panels, chaired by a United Way Board member, will review written applications and presentations from four to five agencies and make funding recommendations to our Board of Directors. With your input, the Board will make the final funding decisions for all programs.  To learn more about this opportunity: Click here. 

We are giving priority for seats on the panel to donors to our 2011-2012 Campaign, as the panel is making investment decisions for all our donors.  (It's not too late to make a campaign contribution, if you haven't yet!)

TREATAlert!  The Rotary Club of Traverse City is Hosting the 1st Annual Grand Traverse Region New Release Wine Tastingon Thursday, June 14, from 5:30 - 8:00 pm at NMC's Hagerty Center. Over 18 wineries from the Leelanau & Old Mission peninsulas will be showcasing their newly released wines.

 

You don't want to miss this inaugural event as it will be the only opportunity to sample northern Michigan's finest, newly-released wines all in one location.  Attendees will receive an etched wine glass with 10 tasting tickets, appetizers, and participation in a live auction of great wine-related packages.  All proceeds go to Rotary International's program to end polio across the globe, called PolioPlus.

 

The 1st Annual Grand Traverse Region New Release Wine Tasting will be a celebration of northern's Michigan's wine culture and a standard for fun!  Featured wines on display will be available for purchase at a nominal discount.  Partnering with Rotary are the Wineries of the Old Mission Peninsula (WOMP), the Leelanau Peninsula Vintner's Association (LPVA), and the Blue Goat Wine Shop.
